How Should You Eat to Nurture Your Skin?
Taking care of yourself means more than showering daily or remembering to take your vitamins. Self-care is an ongoing chain of activities you engage in every day that serve to enhance your health and wellbeing.
If skincare is an important part of your self-love routine, eating well should be, too. Like Beyonce once said: “We have to care about our bodies and what we put in them.”
Here at Return to Eden Cosmetics, we’ve compiled a list of foods that will benefit your skin inside and out.
Are You Eating Fatty Fish?
Fat is not the monster it was once made out to be. Eating fatty fish, including salmon, mackerel, and herring, will supply your body with ample amounts of omega-3 fatty acids – fats that are necessary for keeping your skin supple, thick, and moisturized.
Not a Fan of Fish?
That’s totally okay! You can also get your omega-3 fatty acids from vegetarian sources. Some of the vegetarian foods with the best omega-3 to omega-6 ratio are: collard greens (Southerners are cheering), spinach, walnuts, chia seeds, kidney beans, mango, and papaya.
Research has shown that when women increase their intake of healthy fats, their skin is more supple, springy, and holds moisture better than those in who lack adequate amounts of fat in their diet.
And, since all of us need more omega-3’s (or at least a better ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 in our diet), including these foods listed above (fatty fish or vegetarian list) along with oils that have high ratios of omega-3 to omega-6, such as hemp seed oil, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil, not only has the potential to improve our health, but also to improve our skin’s appearance, and who doesn’t want that?
Do You Like Sweet Potatoes? In the US, sweet potatoes are typically enjoyed around the holidays, but the vitamins and nutrients they contain warrant a second look. Sweet potatoes, oranges, carrots, and spinach, are chock-full of beta-carotene; a substance which your body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect your skin from sun exposure – the #1 cause of premature aging of the skin.
Love What You Eat
This is by no means an exhaustive list of skin-healthy foods. Including vegetables such as red and yellow bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, as well as dark chocolate, can provide your body with the nutrients and anti-oxidants it needs to help keep your skin healthy and radiant.
At Return to Eden Cosmetics, our goal is to provide safe and effective skincare products that will make a difference in your skin and your life. We believe that caring about yourself and loving the skin you’re in is an essential part of a healthy, happy life.
