As we age there is still a chance of new moles appearing, especially when spending significant time in the sun. While not all new spots after the age of 25 will be cancerous, it is always important to monitor any skin changes. Moles can last for a number of years and may even have hairs growing from them.
What causes moles to suddenly appear?
It’s thought to be an interaction of genetic factors and sun damage in most cases. Moles usually emerge in childhood and adolescence, and change in size and color as you grow. New moles commonly appear at times when your hormone levels change, such as during pregnancy.
Can moles appear later in life?
Some moles might not appear until later in life. It is normal to have between 10 to 40 moles by adulthood. As the years pass, moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and lighter in color.

It’s important to get a new or existing mole checked out if it: changes shape or looks uneven. changes colour, gets darker or has more than 2 colours. starts itching, crusting, flaking or bleeding.
How do I know if my mole is bad?
Other warning signs are:
- A sore that doesn’t heal.
- Spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin.
- Redness or a new swelling beyond the border of the mole.
- Change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness, or pain.
